Wow, it feels like just yesterday that I was saying so long to a group of students I had spent an entire semester with. Before long, I'll be graduating, and after that, a job (fingers crossed!). Today was the first day of a new semester at a new high school. The school is much farther away than my last assignment, and much bigger. I now have two classes that I am head of, but today, things went swimmingly.
What's particularly exciting about this semester is that the school I am working at utilizes a high level of technology. Even though the room is not equipped with laptops or iPads like my last school, we are using technology in so many different ways and forms almost every single day. I have even created a website for my students to access general information such as assignments, calendars, and resources.
Today, my students participated in a class-wide scavenger hunt, designed to get them (and me) better acquainted with the campus. My students are all freshmen and I can tell that many of them were nervous about being on such a large, intimidating campus, but many of them were eager to participate and were thrilled to learn that I encouraged the use of their phones to take pictures of the various places mentioned on the scavenger hunt.
The only difficulty with the school so far has been balancing class sizes. The first class I instruct contains 37 students, while the second class I instruct only has 23 students. Granted, this is the first day and there will surely be plenty of changes coming down the pipeline, but already I can tell that my second class will be much easier to manage that the first.
After my USD classes commence, I will officially be in "school mode," so I'll check back in once things really get rolling.
Best,
Hunter
