When I last left off, I was considering focusing my attention on a few particular students in order to reign in the control of my classroom. This is not to say that things are completely out of control, I just feel that I would be promoting a much more productive classroom environment if I was able to control the behavior of certain students who I have observed cause consistent distractions in my classroom.
I have slightly altered my action research to focus on creating a positive learning community rather than focus on correcting the behavior of certain students in my class. Now, to attain this, I will be looking to work a few students in particular to help set the tone for the rest of the class. I have been busy this week compiling research and looking into ways this can best be accomplished. I was happy to discover that many of the techniques I use in my class already are supported by past research, but, I feel that I am not expanding upon these techniques to their fullest extent.
It becomes only natural to start preparing to develop my action plan. I still have some research to do, but I will largely be using the implications of the studies I have been reading and the techniques suggested by these articles to help guide my teaching towards a positive learning community. The only difficulty I foresee encountering is how I will measure my progress in achieving this goal. Stay tuned for updates on that front.
Meanwhile, my life outside of school has kept me busy. I proposed to my girlfriend this past summer, and we have been trying very hard to move in together, which has been a source of some emotional stress in my life. However, I try to counter that stress by spending time doing things with my high school, such as helping to instruct the school's drumline. Of course, my classes at USD are keeping me busy as well, so there really is never a dull moment. At this point, I have to wake up every morning with a positive attitude and optimism to propel me through the good times and the bad times.
My next reflection will focus upon my action plan and what specifically I will be doing in my classroom after my literature review has been completed. Until then!
Best,
Hunter
